FAQs: Overdue, Damaged and Lost Items

Why does Great River Regional Library use a collection agency?

Great River Regional Library uses a collection agency, Unique Management Services, in order to recover materials and fees. The main goal of using the collection agency is to remind patrons of their overdue items and encourage returning them. If an account has a balance of $25 or more for 30 days, the account will be sent to the collection agency and a $10 fee added to the account.

Where should I direct questions about the collection agency and disputed charges?

Contact your local library staff for questions about library balances. You may also contact the Patron Services Specialist at (320) 650-2510 if you have questions about collection agency charges.

Please note: Our Ask A Librarian online chat is a consortium of libraries around the US who help each other by answering patrons' reference and other questions. GRRL staff are not available for online chat 24/7, so if you have account questions please reach out to us by phone or in person for best service.

What are the fines for overdue materials?

Effective 2022, GRRL does not charge overdue fines on materials, although if items are not returned within 45 days of going overdue they will considered lost and charges assessed.

Replacement costs will be applied for lost items and those damaged beyond repair. In order to avoid having items automatically set to lost, they must be returned within 45 days of the due date. You may receive a bill for lost items. If lost items are returned in good condition, replacement costs may be removed.
