Showtime at Your Library: 2019 Summer Reading Program at Great River Regional Library

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (May 28, 2019) – No more pencils, no more books … well, except for the ones from your local library!

Great River Regional Library (GRRL) will kick off the annual Summer Reading Program on Monday, June 10, continuing through Saturday, Aug. 12.

The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program (SRP), It’s Showtime at Your Library, celebrates the whimsy, magic and excitement kids can discover just by picking up a book.

The program is open to all kids, ages 0-18, and is divided into three categories: baby (ages 0-5), child (age 3-grade 6) or teen (grades 7-12.) Ages 3-5 can choose between the baby or child programs.

Summer reading isn’t just fun; it’s extremely beneficial. Regular reading goes far in combating the “summer slide,” the phenomenon of students losing academic footing during a long academic break.

Students who join public library summer reading programs scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year than those who did not participate – in some cases, significantly higher.

Registration for the Summer Reading Program will begin on Monday, June 10, and can be done online or by visiting one of GRRL’s 32 libraries. Participants will receive reading records to track their progress. These reading records must be completed and returned to the library by the end of the program, August 10, in order to be eligible for prize drawings. Each branch offers a unique assortment of SRP prizes!

GRRL is hosting many Summer Reading Program kickoff events around the region, including magic shows, ice cream socials, live music and more. Learn more by visiting the events calendar on griver.org/events or by picking up an event guide at any GRRL branch.

Great River Regional Library (GRRL) provides library services at 32 public libraries in Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd and Wright Counties. GRRL supplies the residents of Central Minnesota with nearly 1 million books, CDs and DVDs, 250 public computers, programming and information services.
