The Metaphysical Club : a story of ideas in America
Author(s):
Description:
The Metaphysical Club was an informal group that met in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1872, to talk about ideas. Its members included Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., future associate justice of the United States Supreme Court; William James, the father of modern American psychology; and Charles Sanders Peirce, logician, scientist, and the founder of semiotics. The Club was probably in existence for about nine months. No records were kept. The one thing we know that came out of it was an idea--an idea about ideas. Holmes, James, and Peirce all believed that ideas are not things "out there" waiting to be discovered but are tools people invent--like knives and forks and microchips--to make their way in the world. They thought that ideas are produced not by individuals, but by groups of individuals, that ideas are social, that they are entirely dependent on their human carriers and environment, and that the survival of any idea is on its adaptability. This book is written in the spirit of this idea about ideas. It is not a history of philosophy but a narrative about personalities and social history, a story about America. It begins with the Civil War and ends in 1919 with Justice Holmes's dissenting opinion in the case of U.S. v. Abrams--the basis for the constitutional law of free speech.

Alien nation : 36 true tales of immigration
Author(s):
Description:
Originally told on-stage and adapted here for the page, these 36 fascinating, unique, and celebratory stories of migration, culture shock, family, and life come from well-known voices including Sonia Manzano, Alexander Chee, Andrae Aciman, Laura Gaomez, Aparna Nancherla as well as regular people hailing from every corner of the world. These stories are sometimes painful, often funny, beautiful, but above all honest and enlightening. The writers share moments from their lives, reminding us that immigration is not simply a word but a world, "alien" and throbbing with talent and potential. This book is a balm, a link through human stories, and a celebration of immigration at a turbulent time, reaching to the telling of real experiences and inner thoughts of immigrants and children of immigrants; those who left in search of newness, opportunity, and survival, and those who grew up in that newness with their tongues in multiple languages and feet in multiple worlds.--

After being subdued, it speaks in an electronic voice, accusing Zoey of being its murderer. Soon, it makes the same claim to the public at large, along with the promise of a cash reward for proof that Zoey and the Suits are behind the crime. Now Zoey is having doubts of her own: Is she 100% sure that someone on her team didn't do this? The war queens : extraordinary women who ruled the battlefield
Author(s):
Jordan, Jonathan W., 1967-
Jordan, Emily Anne,
Description:
"History's killer queens come in all colors, ages, and leadership styles. Elizabeth Tudor and Golda Meir played the roles of high-stakes gamblers who studied maps with an unblinking, calculating eye. Angola's Queen Njinga was willing to shed (and occasionally drink) blood to establish a stable kingdom in an Africa ravaged by the slave trade. Caterina Sforza defended her Italian holdings with cannon and scimitar, and Indira Gandhi launched a war to solve a refugee crisis. From ancient Persia to modern-day Britain, the daunting thresholds these exceptional women had to cross--and the clever, sometimes violent ways in which they smashed obstacles in their paths--are evoked in vivid detail. The narrative sidles up to these war queens in the most dire, tumultuous moments of their reigns and examines the brilliant methods and maneuvers they each used to defend themselves and their people from enemy forces." --
