There’s no better place to learn about local news events than in a community newspaper. At many community papers it’s not unusual for a one- or two-person reporting team to be responsible for checking the police blotter, attending school board meetings, going to council meetings, Friday night football and every grand opening, fundraising breakfast and special event in town. Community newspaper journalists know what’s important to their readers because they live it.
Great River Regional Library subscribes to almost 50 newspapers, and many of them are available at more than one library. We subscribe to some of the big-city newspapers, such as the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and New York Times, but most of our subscriptions are to the smaller papers. Each of our locations has the local paper, and usually a few other newspapers such as county publications and newspapers from neighboring towns.
So stop by, sit down, check out the weddings and baseball scores, read about the good and the bad, take note of special deals from the local businesses.
And don’t forget to take something home with you!
