Friends of the Upsala Public Library have graciously funded three book kits for Great River Regional Library. The kits are Breaking Stalin’s Nose by Eugene Yelchin, The Girl From the Train by Irma Joubert and Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys.     Breaking Stalin’s Nose follows a young boy growing up in Stalinist Russia who learns what Communism means to his family, his neighbors and his country. The Girl From the Train tells a story from World War II in which a man...
In honor of Short Story Writing Month, 22 local 'authors' gave us their best short, short story based on the picture prompt.  GRRL is made up of 32 libraries, so 32 seemed the perfect number of words to give the best take on the picture prompt!  Teens and adults and even published well-known authors submitted short, short stories.  Here is a sampling of the stories we received: Stinky socks, William's muscles ached. Each November, the Snappy Elmdalers 4H Club hangs its club banner at the Upsala Public Library. This year’s banner highlights the theme, “Believe In Yourself.”  The members designed and crafted the banner. There is always a program going on at the Upsala Public Library! Artists, authors, speakers and programs for kids are scheduled throughout the month, and passive or do-it-yourself programs are also available. The second season of Once Upon a Reader, a statewide one-book program, will feature Ten Pigs: An Epic Bath Adventure. The book is written and illustrated by Minnesota resident Derek Anderson. Upsala area kids are invited to visit the Storywalk that will be erected on the front lawn of Upsala Area Schools from Tuesday, Sept. 6 through Friday, Sept. 9. GRRL - Upsala's Summer Reading Program is still in full swing! There is still time to start as a baby, a toddler, a tween or a teen! GRRL - Upsala draws for prizes weekly and has a number of ongoing contests which patrons can enter.  The Summer Reading Program officially ends on Saturday, Aug. 13!

In a hard thought battle on Saturday Jan. 9, three members of the GRRL-Upsala Trivia Team answered their way to victory in GRRL's online trivia contest. Team members Mike and Debbie Disher and Nancy Reesemann researched questions finding answers through Google searches and GRRL databases. The team were excited about answering and expect to return next year when the contest will be bigger and even better.
