Bruce The Bug Guy visited GRRL Upsala on Wednesday, Aug. 13 with a fantastic group of LIVE insects! Children and adults met large cecropia moths, Madagascar hissing roaches, millipedes and a tarantula. Bruce taught us about insects, how to handle them, where to look for them in Minnesota, and why we should not fear them. We would like to have Bruce and the insects visit again.
Forty Upsala area residents enjoyed Jeffrey Vinokur, The Dancing Scientist, as part of the library's Summer Reading Program kickoff in June. Kids learned about polymers and smoke rings and acids from Vinokur, who has an M.S. in Biochemistry and performs kid-friendly science programs at schools and libraries across the country.
Members of the Snappy Elmdalers hung the 2014 4H banner they crafted. This partnership with the Great River Regional Library in Upsala brings the 4H group into the building and brightens up the library walls! Morrison County Dairy Princesses Sara Roerick and Tracy Herzog from Upsala served ice cream to 74 Upsala residents in celebration of GRRL~Upsala's 25th year. Kids, teens, adults and even an ad hoc singing group attended the ice cream event, held Wednesday June 19. Here's to 25 more library years in Upsala! A new rivalry has begun between students at Upsala Area Schools and Holdingford Public Schools. The two schools challenged each other to a reading contest, and used the Great River Regional Library (GRRL) Winter Reading Program to provide the contest structure. The library’s winter reading program theme was “Escape Into Reading.” To qualify for prizes, participants read books, recorded the titles on entry forms and turned the forms in at the library to qualify for weekly...
Due to the success of the Upsala Area Schools boys basketball team, which begins play in the state basketball tournament on Thursday, March 21, the library's watercolor classes with artist Dan Mondloch will be rescheduled. Those sessions were to occur Wednesday and Thursday - March 20 and 21 - during both days and one evening. Watch the Events calendar or call the library to learn the reschedule dates. Mid-April dates are being considered for rescheduling.

Upsala Public Library patron Bridget Gerads received a certificate and prize from Branch Manager Wanda Erickson for her winning essay in the "I Love To Read" Summer Reading Program contest sponsored by Great River Regional Library. Bridget has used the Upsala Public Library for many years and is also a library volunteer. Congratulations Bridget!
Movie Monday kicked off June 11, 2012 at the Upsala Public Library. Kids, teens and families snack on popcorn and juice while viewing a Really Cool Movie each Monday, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. "Upsala Lions donated a beautiful television for our library," said Branch Manager Wanda Erickson. Upsala area library patrons use the television for viewing movies and for programming. Photos from library events also scroll in slideshows on the 50" screen.
