In a hard thought battle on Saturday Jan. 9, three members of the GRRL-Upsala Trivia Team answered their way to victory in GRRL's online trivia contest. Team members Mike and Debbie Disher and Nancy Reesemann researched questions finding answers through Google searches and GRRL databases. The team were excited about answering and expect to return next year when the contest will be bigger and even better.

"What a cool banner!" So said patrons of the Upsala Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 31, when members of the Snappy Elmdalers 4-H Club hung their award-winning banner at the library so area residents could enjoy their work. This banner, the fifth that has hung at GRRL - Upsala, captured Grand Champion at the Morrison County Fair and won one of only three Purple Ribbons awarded at the Minnesota State Fair. Every other year, Upsala Public Library hosts a makerspace program called Holiday Hangups. This year, in the first fall session, 40 kids had a blast crafting fall-themed windsocks. A winter session is also planned for December.

The Upsala Public Library hosts a spirited book group named Between The Covers every 4th Monday of the month at 7 p.m. The group will not meet in July, but will read "All The Light We Cannot See", for discussion on Monday, Aug. 24. Toddlers and their parents enjoy hearing stories and making crafts at Great River Regional Library in Upsala. A few months ago the children were marching around the library while playing music with instruments. Story times take place on Wednesday nights, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for children 18 months to 3 years with their caregivers. Theresa and Kristin, two sisters from Upsala, attended the MSP Comicon event held May 16 and 17 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds using tickets they won from GRRL through a random drawing. Comicon is billed as 100,000 square feet of comics and related arts and collectibles. It includes dealers from all across the United States. Bruce The Bug Guy visited GRRL Upsala on Wednesday, Aug. 13 with a fantastic group of LIVE insects! Children and adults met large cecropia moths, Madagascar hissing roaches, millipedes and a tarantula. Bruce taught us about insects, how to handle them, where to look for them in Minnesota, and why we should not fear them. We would like to have Bruce and the insects visit again.

Forty Upsala area residents enjoyed Jeffrey Vinokur, The Dancing Scientist, as part of the library's Summer Reading Program kickoff in June. Kids learned about polymers and smoke rings and acids from Vinokur, who has an M.S. in Biochemistry and performs kid-friendly science programs at schools and libraries across the country.
