It was fitting that the first song harpist Andrea Stern played for an appreciative Royalton audience on Wednesday, Dec. 7 was "In the Bleak Midwinter" by Christina Rossetti. The early darkness, the lack of snow and the 70th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack had cast a somber pall on the day. Andrea lifted our spirits with lovely, almost heavenly music. Ventriloquist James Wedgwood and some of his friends entertained an appreciative group at the Royalton Public Library on Monday, Nov. 14. Wedgwood lives near Fergus Falls, but travels throughout the country performing at state and county fairs, corporate events, schools and libraries. Wedgwood posed for a photo with Royalton patron Naomi Ferguson, his friend Patrick and Jane, a ginger-headed puppet who usually resides in the Great River Regional Library School Days storytelling kit.
On an unusually warm fall afternoon Sen. Al Franken visited the town of Royalton on Saturday, Nov. 12 to meet with city officials about the solar panels recently installed on City Hall. Franken, a member of the Senate Energy Committee, recently announced an initiative he said could save Minnesotans hundreds of thousands of tax dollars by retrofitting buildings to make them more energy efficient. The Royalton Friends of the Library are having a book and bake sale on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the council chambers at Royalton City Hall. Baked goods that are donated may be brought to City Hall on Friday, Nov. 18 between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. or on Saturday, Nov. 19 before 10 a.m. Proceeds will be used to benefit library services. Andrea Stern will be performing at the Royalton Library on Wednesday, Dec. 7 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Andrea delighted visitors at the library last year with her lovely harp music. This event is not a concert. Library patrons can stay as long as their schedules allow. This is a great opportunity to hear harp music from a professional performing artist.
The south wall of the children's area in the Royalton Library is adorned with art work compliments of the students from the Royalton Elementary School. Branch Manager Linda Mueller has never seen the art elves make their appearance. She is always pleasantly surprised when the new pieces of art appear in the library. Residents of Royalton may recall listening to Minnesota's newly named poet laureate, Joyce Sutphen, read some of her delightful poetry during a recent visit to the Royalton Public Library. In her May 2010 visit to the library Sutphen chose poetry primarily from her latest book, First Words. Linda Mueller is the new Branch Manager of the Royalton Public Library. Mueller is an experienced employee of Great River Regional Library (GRRL). Before transferring to Royalton she managed the Long Prairie branch, and she has also worked in the Little Falls Carnegie Library. She has worked in school libraries at the elementary, high school and college level and is a graduate of St. Cloud State University.
