The Melrose Public Library's long awaited new circulation desk has arrived! The staff and patrons are loving it! Features include two additional work areas, much more counter space, increased storage, and quite a bit more area behind the circulation desk. This will make checkout much more efficient at busy times. A special thanks to the Melrose Friends of the Library and the City of Melrose for making this happen!

Approximately 600 people opted to celebrate the holidays by taking part in activities at the Melrose Public Library on Friday, Nov. 27. The Melrose library participated in the city wide annual Holiday Kick-Off. Library visitors were able to enjoy reindeer rides from Hemker Zoo, craft activities, temporary tattoos, cider and cookies and holiday music provided by Bob Niehaus, who has a special knack for entertaining children. A spring story hour at the Melrose Public Library on April 6 was a hit with families who complimented the staff on presenting a great program. The children listened to stories, searched for eggs during a egg hunt, participated in an egg race, made two adorable flower crafts, and enjoyed a very cute bunny snack made out of Twinkies and Peeps.

Once Upon a Reader "Moo!" author David LaRochelle and illustrator Mike Wohnoutka presented a program at the Melrose Public Library on March 2. The Traveling Trunk show "Moo!" was part of the statewide program promoting early literacy. Children and parents were entertained with the "Moo!" puppet show featuring cow singing, dancing and drawings by the illustrator.

The Melrose Public Library's Kickoff to Summer party took place on Monday, June 9. The Stearns County Dairy Princesses served root beer floats, a balloon artist made very creative balloons for the children, and magician/comedy performer Brodini entertained the crowd. There was a great turnout and many children signed up for the Summer Reading Program.

Melrose Public Library celebrated National Library Week with an author visit from William Kent Krueger. He lives in St. Paul and writes about crime in Minnesota's north woods, frequently introducing characters and cultural lore from the Anishinaabe Indians. Several of his books have received national awards. He was very entertaining and a nice crowd of patrons enjoyed visiting with him and getting their books signed.

Llama Llama Day was held at the Melrose Public Library on Thursday, April 10. There were live llamas from Hemker Park and Zoo, crafts, stories, and snacks. Approximately 90 people were in attendance and each child received a free LLama LLama book that was donated by the Melrose Friends of the Library.

The winter reading program was a huge success in Melrose. Prize drawings took place for library mugs as well as a beautiful quilt donated by Marie Wuertz. The lucky recipient of the quilt was Marge Thull.

Teens, if you like to read, play games, and eat pizza, grab your friends, sign up at the Melrose Public Library, and start reading. Students may sign up to participate in The Battle of the Books in groups or individually. The Battle, in which teams compete to see who remembers the most about the books they have read, will be Monday, March 3 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Melrose library. The Winter Reading Program for adults and teens is taking place at all Great River Regional Library locations through Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014. We have a special incentive here at the Melrose Public Library. Come sign up at your library and simply read books to be eligible for the grand prize of this beautiful quilt donated to us by a library patron. There are weekly drawings for many other prizes including mugs and gift cards.
