The popular R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog) program has been scheduled at the Howard Lake Public Library for a series of Fall, 2012 dates: Saturday, Sept. 15; Saturday, Oct. 6; Saturday, Nov. 10; and Saturday, Dec. 1. The Howard Lake Public Library is offering a series of Thursday morning Summer Storytimes to complement the Summer Library Program theme "Dream Big, Read!" Storytimes are for preschoolers 3 to 5 years of age, and are from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Each storytime has its own theme. Hopper the Frog joined a group of twelve children attending a Leap Into Reading storytime at the Howard Lake Public Library on Wednesday, April 18. The group listened attentively to froggy stories, sang songs, made fun frog masks, and then checked out books to take home. On Saturday, Feb. 18, the Howard Lake Public Library is hosting a special Martha Speaks event for young readers ages 4-10 and their families. The event will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Howard Lake Community Room above the library. The rainy weather and the temporary State of Minnesota shutdown delayed the planned water, sewer and road work in front of the Howard Lake library, but the clear street probably helped generate a record number of participants for the Summer Reading Program. The anniversary celebration for R.E.A.D. brought together 4 pairs of dogs and their handlers and nearly 40 youth readers plus their parents. The two-hour event on Saturday, November 14th was a success. The Howard Lake Community Room was abuzz with the sound of young voices taking turns reading to Penny, Sara, Jack & Keira. The Howard Lake City Council recognized the Howard Lake Friends of the Library for its fundraising and volunteer efforts by proclaiming Oct. 18- 24 to be "Howard Lake Friends of the Library Week."
