Friends of the Becker Library will again be hosting a USED BOOK & MEDIA SALE here in the library. So get ready to stock up on old favorites or new items. Perhaps a treasure awaits you here at Becker Library. Dates are Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We need your gently used books and media. Visit the Becker Public Library on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 10:30 a.m. for magic, illusions, music and puppetry. The Halloween Safety Magic Show focuses on Trick-or-Treat safety for our young library users. This show is never scary and is guaranteed to entertain while reminding kids to be safe. No registration is required. Specifically for ages 3-6, but all ages are welcome!
Becker Public Library is offering free computer basics and Internet help sessions. Learn how to set up an email account, perform a basic web search or use Word and Excel. Our experienced volunteer will work with you one-on-one for 20 minutes. The Winter Reading Program for teens and adults officially ended on Saturday, Feb. 23. The Becker Public Library gave away a variety of prizes to program participants. Each week a special Winter Reading Program mug with coupons for a McDonald's coffee and a DQ Blizzard treat were given. Look for Preschool Story Time to return to the Becker Public Library on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 10:30 a.m. after a brief hiatus. There will be no Preschool Story time events on Dec. 18 and 25, nor on Jan. 1. Preschool Story time is for children ages 2-6. We illustrate the "Every Child Ready to Read" skills needed to promote early literacy. Come visit Ms. Gail and Ms. Jeannette as they read stories, sing songs and make crafts.
Bruce the Bug Guy was the attraction at the Becker Library on Tuesday, May 15 for an audience of 115 adults and kids. There were lots of screams and laughs as Bruce pulled out his collection of bugs, moths and spiders. The kids were allowed to hold millipedes, Madagascar hissing cockroaches and huge moths. The Becker Public Library, with the help of local artist, Alison Love Unzelman, is sponsoring a Collaborative Mural Project for the library. This project is a community effort and we are inviting people of all ages (adults, teens and children two and older) to participate. The mural takes the concept of the Dewey Decimal System and brings it to life on the walls of the Becker Library. Group work for the sixth mural is scheduled to start on February 3, 2014. Children at the Becker Public Library took a Leap Into Reading with Hopper the Frog on Tuesday, April 3. Becker Branch Assistant Jeannette Burkhardt read stories to a group of attentive children whose ages ranged from nine months to six years. They read a selection of entertaining frog stories, danced, and made clever little frog puppets with paper plates. They were learning as well as having fun. Valentine's Day is just around the corner! Let's make some fun cards for that special valentine. Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. or Feb. 9 at 3:30 p.m. the Becker Public Library will have a "Make and Take" crafting activity. Supplies for Friendship Blossoms and Love Bugs will be provided. All ages are welcome to attend. Our younger library friends will need assistance from an adult.
Thursday Dec. 15, the Friends of the Becker Library hosted a gingerbread house making day. Girl Scout Troops 582 and 259 as well as other library users participated in the ninety-minute program. Each child was able to build their own gingerbread house out of graham crackers to take home.
