The Becker Public Library hosted the Dancing Scientist on Tuesday, June 10 to a huge crowd of 176 kids from the Becker community. They watched as Jeffrey Vinokur danced, made air visible, changed colored water back to colorless water and made string that he pulled out of the beaker, as seen in the photo. Summer is just around the corner and with it, the start of the Summer Reading Program! Becker is kicking off the summer right with two great events suitable for all ages. Monday, June 9 at 7:00 p.m., the Teen Advisory Board is hosting an Ice Cream Social for kids ages 12-18 who are signing up for the Summer Reading Program. Do you dislike throwing away your old bags? Or perhaps you are looking for new ways to use up your old bags. Try Upcycling! Artist Jen Anfinson will be at the Becker Public Library, Thursday, March 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., teaching people how to upcycle old bags into something "new." Corrine Lanz will be at the Becker Public Library on Tuesday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. to give a history/craft presentation describing the role quilts played in the Civil War. After the presentation, participants will create a miniature Civil War quilt block. The pattern, instructions, needle and materials will be provided. Please bring fabric scissors. Like to eat chocolate? Like to get together with friends and eat chocolate? Then the Friends of the Becker Library have an event for you! The "Love Stinks" Chocolate Fest will be held at the Becker Public Library, Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. This event is for teens and preteens ages 12-18. The Becker Public Library, with the help of local artist Alison Love Unzelman, is gearing up to start work on the sixth section of the Dewey Decimal System collaborative mural project displayed in the library. The sixth mural will focus on the numbers 600-699. This project is a community effort and the library invites people of all ages (adults, teens and children two and older) to participate. The mural takes the concept of the Dewey Decimal System and brings it to life on the walls....
'Tis the season for snowflakes, hot chocolate, cold noses and cold toes. But the weather at the Becker Library is toasty. Join the Becker Library staff as we welcome Paul Imholte, the musical String Man on his Holiday Music Tour. Enjoy the music of the season as you browse the shelves or come sit and relax in the library. The Holiday Music Tour will be presented Thursday, Dec. 5, 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. This program is paid for in part with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
The Becker Friends of the Library are hosting a Make & Take craft day at the Becker Public Library on Monday, Nov. 25. We will make holiday gingerbread houses using graham crackers and assorted candies. Decorating will start at 4:00 p.m. and end at 6:00 p.m. We will have several books available for ideas and suggestions including Gingerbread Houses: Baking & Building Memories by Nonnie Cargas. The Becker Public Library held two Halloween themed events recently. Magician Bob attended Storytime at the Becker Public Library Oct. 22. As well as performing magic tricks, he provided our preschool library users with lots of hints about having a safe Halloween. Magician Bob reminded the kids to check the batteries in their flashlight before going out on Halloween night, to tip their masks up while walking between houses, and finally, to always, always, have an adult check their candy...
